The crunching of automobiles and the pouring of molten metals from cauldrons were noisy torments to the neighbors, a harried husband and wife. Their lives reflected "the lorries, the crushing's, the fumes, the dust." as they shouted to hear each other. The script, from the BBC, gave our sound designer, Clay Grillo, a chance to spend several days at an Emeryville scrap-metal yard
that hounded their East Bay residents. Grillo eventually composed a sound piece transforming the cacophony into something like music.
